Am I eligible to apply?Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously participated in an NEH-sponsored workshop or institute. This program is designed for K-5 educators with an interest in teaching Asian American immigration and untold histories.

What needs to be included in my application?1. Complete the online application form. 2. A résumé or short biography, including contact information for a professional reference. 3. Responses to three prompts.

If I apply, when will I hear back?Successful applicants will be notified via email on April 2, 2025. You will have until April 16, 2025, to accept or decline the offer.

What paperwork will I need to submit if I accept your invitation to attend the institute?You will need to sign the “appointment” letter we send you, which outlines the length of the institute and stipend details. Additionally, you’ll provide your current address and social security number. Instructions for submitting these documents will be included in your acceptance packet.

How do I get to San Fransisco?Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from the institute. The field trip to Angel Island will include group transportation coordinated by the program.

Where will I stay during the institute?Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging. Suggestions for accommodations near our meeting locations in San Francisco will be provided in your acceptance packet.

Are accommodations available for participants with disabilities?Yes, please inform us of any accessibility needs during the application process so we can make appropriate arrangements.

What will the daily schedule look like?A preliminary agenda will be shared with accepted participants. The institute includes a mix of live virtual sessions, small-group activities, and on-site visits.

What assignments or homework will there be?Participants will be expected to engage in preparatory readings and complete a final project synthesizing their learning into classroom resources or professional development materials. Final projects will be shared on the last day of the institute.

Will I receive continuing education credit?Yes, participants will receive a certificate of completion detailing the total hours spent in the institute. This certificate can be submitted for continuing education or professional development credit as applicable in your state or district.

How much will I receive for my stipend?The total stipend is $2,200, which will be distributed upon successful completion of the institute.

Is the stipend taxable?Yes, the full amount of $2,200 is considered taxable income. Participants will be required to complete a W-9 form, and a 1099 will be provided for tax filing purposes. Neither the NEH nor the sponsoring institution can provide tax advice; consult a tax professional for guidance.

What happens if I can't attend the entire institute?If you are unable to attend all sessions, a pro-rated portion of your stipend will be deducted per NEH regulations.
